Driven by a passion for the craftsmanship of vintage safety razors, Stan Hickam founded Above the Tie in 2011. His deep appreciation for the timeless design of razors from the golden era of shaving inspired him to create a modern line that embodied the same performance, elegance, and quality as those classic tools.

Rather than outsourcing production overseas, Hickam refused to compromise on quality — choosing instead to CNC machine each razor from solid stainless steel in the United States. This unwavering commitment to American manufacturing and precision craftsmanship quickly set Above the Tie apart, establishing the company as a benchmark for excellence in modern wet shaving. Hickam’s dedication to producing only the finest safety razors helped spark a renaissance in precision-machined shaving instruments, filling a niche and inspiring other brands to elevate their own standards.

From its inception, Above the Tie was a family enterprise. Hickam’s daughter, Mariah, and son-in-law, Matt, played integral roles in the company, contributing to product design, customer service, and website development. As the brand evolved, Hickam eventually stepped back from daily operations, entrusting leadership to Mariah and Matt, who continue to guide Above the Tie with the same vision, craftsmanship, and dedication that defined its founder.
